Job Description – Deputy Sheriff
- Patrols assigned area for the prevention of crime
and enforcement of laws and ordinances
- Responds to request for law enforcement services
and takes appropriate action
- Arrests violators of laws and ordinances, and ensures violators are booked on charges
- Escorts prisoners to jail and court
- Enforces traffic laws, directs traffic, and provides information concerning the location of streets, routes, and buildings
- Investigates and prepares detailed reports of collisions
- Investigates suspicious conditions, activities, or persons
- Investigates and checks for wanted or missing persons and stolen property
- Participates in the operation of various units and the service of civil and criminal subpoenas and other court orders
- Participates in riot and crowd control
- Controls and restrains potentially violent persons
- Conducts investigations of criminal cases and gathers, preserves, and analyzes facts and evidence
Salary & Benefits - Deputy Sheriff
- Salary Range: $38,272 ($18.40 hourly) to $53,851 ($25.89 hourly)
- Twelve (12) vacation days per year (various increases per County schedule thereafter)

Hiring Process
- Physical fitness test consisting of sit-ups, push-ups, flexibility, and a 1.5-mile run.
- This is a Pass/Fail test. Multiple choice test: 100 items, two (2) hour test.
Applicants who pass are scheduled for an oral board interview the following week. Those that pass oral board interviews will be scheduled for extensive background screenings, including a polygraph exam.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- At least 21 years of age (at time of appointment)
- Valid Arizona driver's license (at time of hire)
- Registered voter in Pima County (at time of hire)
- United States citizen
- Be of excellent character
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language
- If Prior Military: Must have been honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces
- No felony convictions
- No unlawful use of a narcotic or dangerous drug within the past seven (7) years
- No unlawful use of marijuana within the past three (3) years
- No pattern of drug abuse
- Must be willing to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
